The Ellunhuopa felt hat is

  • It's a nice item because they don't make your head sweat, your forehead doesn't itch. This is because the wool used to make the hat is a south-western material, hypoallergenic and absorbs moisture excellently, therefore the skin stays dry.
  • Convenient because the hat is light and doesn't feel on your head at all, the wind doesn't get through. It can be worn safely in rain and snow, is flexible and keeps its shape well.
  • It's a worthwhile investment because a well felted blanket repels dirt, your hat won't get dirty for years and you won't have to spend extra money on dry cleaning.
  • Beautiful because felt is such a stunning material that it can be used to create the most unique and unexpected shapes.
  • Multipurpose, because you can use it not only in the cold season, but also in summer or even in the sauna.

I work with different types of sheep and other animal fur (such as dog, cat, rabbit and alpaca fur). I have even felted horse hair. You can read more here on my blog.

For 13 years I have been developing different techniques to create the works you love so much. Not only do I use the knowledge, but I know how to pass it on to my students.

Facts about wool

  • Natural wool is one of the most popular materials used in the manufacture of textiles. It retains heat very well.
  • Mankind has been making woollen clothing for thousands of years. Even these days, with the advent of many synthetic materials, it is a very viable material.
  • Merino wool is one of the few natural materials whose properties scientists are still unable to replicate with synthetic analogues.
  • The sheep are sheared twice a year. Each sheep yields between 5 and 18 kg of wool per year, depending on the breed.
  • 10 kilos of sheep's wool will yield a length of yarn of around 6,000 kilometres.
  • The thickness of sheep hair ranges from 14 to 31 microns. In comparison, human hair is 80-120 microns thick.
  • Sheep's wool is fire-resistant. That's why merino wool is part of professional fire-resistant clothing. Such textiles are useful for indoor use.
  • Felt is considered to be the oldest type of wool product. Knowledge people believe that Stone Age people learned to make it about 8,000 years ago.
  • The warmest socks are made of wool.

Hi, I was wondering if I could stretch the cheap wool felt hat I ordered to fit me. I found your site and even missed it a little, that I can't think with my hands, because of my manhood, except with learned steel and mechanics, because I was so inspired by your writing about felting. Well the question is; how do you modify a finished hat to suit yourself?

At first, it is difficult to say what type of hat we are talking about, its quality and the material it is made of. If you mentioned that it is inexpensive, there is a strong suspicion that it is not made of real wool. In this case, the possibilities of resizing the hat are very limited. However, if the hat is made of wool, it is possible to stretch it by wetting it beforehand. Stretching wet and warm wool can sometimes help. You can also try using a steam iron during stretching. Be careful not to damage the hat. Good luck!

About 50-80 g of wool is needed to make a felt hat. Of course it depends on the hat model and the type of wool. I will answer these questions in the online course: https://ellunhuopa.com/tuote/alkajista-edistyneisiin-ohje-vaihe-vaiheelta-kuinka-opit-huovuttamaan-kotona/

      Hi Emilia.
I warmly recommend Ellu's online courses.
I myself have learned a lot about felting through them. They are clear to follow.
You will learn. T: Pirkko Siekkinen
